Trump Defends The Post Amid Criticism

Vice President J.D. Vance came as the Pope and asked people to post on social media that these pictures don’t matter to Trump so he doesn’t care about people making jokes on him.

Trump Defends The Post Amid Criticism

The broader picture: While Vance a Catholic dismissed the apparently AI-generated picture of the president in papal garb others denounced the contentious image.

Generally speaking I don’t mind people cracking jokes I do mind people launching foolish wars that slaughter thousands of my fellow citizens wrote Vance in reaction to a Bill Kristol inquiry on whether he was fine with this disrespect and mocking of the Holy Father.

Earlier in the week the president told reporters that he would like to be pope On Friday night he posted the remarkable photo on his Truth Social.

The picture was uploaded on X by the official White House account.
Driving the news: In a post uploaded on X on Saturday the New York State Catholic Conference which speaks for the state’s bishops criticized the image writing There is nothing clever or funny about this image Mr. President.

“We just buried our beloved Pope Francis and the cardinals are about to enter a solemn conclave to elect a new successor of St. Peter the message stated. Do not mock us.
Axios request for comment was not immediately answered by the White House.

Zoom out: The conclave to decide the late Pope Francis successor begins May 7.

Following a historic papacy that led the Church into more progressive territory, Francis passed away on April 21.
Even though Francis publicly criticized some of the administration’s policies particularly those related to immigration one of his last actions before passing away was to meet with Vance.
Last month,

Trump and first lady Melania Trump attended Francis’ funeral at the Vatican among other foreign leaders.
Zoom in: In a post uploaded on X Saturday Jesuit priest and author The Rev. James Martin stated that he found Trump’s statement deeply offensive but will presume that Mr. Trump meant this light-heartedly.

Yet he said imagine the incandescent outrage the swift condemnation and the individual and joint protests from the US bishops if this had been done by Joe Biden or Barack Obama.
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) took the joke a step further on X Saturday writing that there is very positive reception and strong momentum for President Trump to be the next Pope.

I’m Catholic MAGA influencer Jack Posobiec wrote on X. All week long we have been joking about the impending appointment of the Pope.
It’s called a sense of humor he continued.

In between: Trump has issued a number of religiously focused executive orders including one on Thursday that created a presidential commission on religious liberty.

However religious leaders have condemned some of his broad initiatives including those pertaining to religion such his task force to eradicate anti-Christian bias.
