Although most Senate Democrats Cautiously are not ruling out the possibility that former colleague and Vice President Kamala Harris could win the party’s nomination if she plays her cards correctly they are wary of her running for president again in 2028 after she lost all seven battleground states to Donald Trump in November.

At a San Francisco dinner last week Harris made a comeback to the national scene by giving a well reported speech on Trump’s first 100 days in office. At moments she sounded like a contender again as she criticized him for causing “the greatest man-made economic crisis in modern presidential history.
The 60-year-old Harris is considering her political future and is thought to be a potential candidate for president in 2028 or governor of California in 2026.
When asked if Harris should run for president again a Democrats Cautiously senator who preferred to remain anonymous to discuss the upcoming race responded simply No.
The senator stated that she should move on since she had her chance and the American people had rendered their decision.
Sen. John Hickenlooper (D-Colo.) a 2020 presidential candidate, stated he believes Harris might provide “valuable perspective to the political debate but does not necessarily view her as a frontrunner, despite polls showing her dominating the field of possible candidates due to her high name ID.
When asked if Harris will be a strong contender for president in the upcoming election, he responded, “I think time will tell.
He stated I believe she will contribute to the national dialogue. There will be a wide range of Democratic viewpoints regarding our priorities over the course of the next six to eighteen months. Which values must we prioritize first.
He remarked, “I believe she will have a useful perspective on that.
According to Hickenlooper Harris’s crushing defeat at the hands of Trump does not exclude her from creating a winning strategy for the general election in 2028.
Each election is different. According to him we always try to draw analogies and inferences” from previous elections I don’t believe that her loss disqualifies her.
Given that they are unsure if a more formidable candidate would emerge, several Democratic lawmakers are unwilling to rule out Harris running for president in three years.
After Hillary Clinton lost the 2016 presidential election to Trump despite Clinton winning the popular vote by over 2.9 million votes Democratic senators became more outspoken about the need to move on. Harris received 226 electoral votes compared to Clinton’s 227.
After Clinton lost to Trump Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (Ill.) who had supported the former first lady in the 2016 election notably urged his party to move on from her.
He declared I believe it’s time for our party to switch to new leadership and a new spokesperson.
Sen. Jon Tester, a Democrats Cautiously from Montana dissuaded Clinton from rerunning in 2019.
Additionally Sen Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) stated that Clinton’s decision to run again in 2020, when she would have been 73 on election day would have been a “mistake.
Heinrich, however believes she would probably face a lot of competition, but he is open to Harris running again.
I had a great time serving alongside Kamala Harris who I greatly admire It will be an open process, in my opinion, considering the time limit we have which is much different from what we were dealing with the last time,” he stated. Anybody who believes they have what it takes will enter that and someone will win.
He declared I would never undervalue her talent There are many long-term advantages to having that open process.
Given that President Biden didn’t withdraw from the race until July 21 Democrats Cautiously who believe Harris may run in the general election again in 2028 feel she was hampered by having just a few weeks to campaign as the party’s nominee.
The senator from New Mexico claimed that Harris’s chances were harmed by the shortened general election campaign calendar.
He stated I think you need time to really get to know the candidates and feel” at ease with them You don’t get to hide a lot of cards if you’re going to run for president You truly need to be at ease with yourself and I believe that even that process takes a year.
