The Minecraft Movie, set to release in 2025, is an American fantasy adventure comedy inspired by the popular 2011 video game developed by Mojang Studios.
Directed by Jared Hess, the screenplay is a collaborative effort from writers Chris Bowman, Hubbel Palmer, Neil Widener, Gavin James, and Chris Galletta, based on a story crafted by Allison Schroeder, Bowman, and Palmer.
The story revolves around four unconventional characters who unexpectedly find themselves transported through a portal into a colorful, cubic realm.
To navigate their way back to reality, they must undertake a thrilling quest, aided by an “expert crafter” named Steve, who guides them through the challenges of this unique and imaginative landscape.
The concept of a film adaptation of Minecraft first emerged in 2014, when Markus Persson, the game’s creator, announced that Mojang was in discussions with Warner Bros. Pictures to bring the beloved game to the big screen.
Over the years, the project underwent numerous changes, including shifts in directors, producers, and various iterations of the screenplay.
By 2022, Legendary Entertainment joined the endeavor, appointing director Jared Hess and entering negotiations with Jason Momoa for a leading role.
The casting process continued from May 2023 through January 2024, culminating in a diverse ensemble. Principal photography commenced in January 2024 in New Zealand and wrapped up in April of the same year.
The film’s score was composed by Mark Mothersbaugh, while the visual effects were crafted by a collaboration of industry leaders, including Sony Pictures Imageworks, Wētā FX, and Digital Domain, ensuring a visually stunning representation of the Minecraft universe.

In a bid to revive his faltering career as a doorknob salesman, Steve embarks on an unexpected adventure by breaking into a mine, driven by a long-held childhood aspiration.
Within the depths of the mine, he stumbles upon two extraordinary artifacts: the Orb of Dominance and the Earth Crystal.
Upon discovering that these items, when combined, can open a portal to the Overworld—a realm characterized by its malleable, cube-like terrain—Steve seizes the opportunity to construct his own idyllic paradise.
However, his journey takes a dark turn when he inadvertently finds a portal leading to the Nether, a nightmarish world ruled by Malgosha, a piglin monarch whose insatiable greed stifles any form of creativity.
Recognizing the potential threat posed by the Orb, which would grant Malgosha dominion over the Overworld, Steve devises a plan for his loyal dog, Dennis, to escape with the Orb and the Earth Crystal, concealing them safely beneath his bed in the real world to thwart the piglin ruler’s ambitions.
In the years following his triumph as a video game champion in the 1980s, Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison finds himself managing a struggling video game store in the small town of Chuglass, Idaho.
In a bid to revitalize his business and generate some much-needed cash, he decides to attend a local storage auction, hoping to uncover valuable items that he can resell.
To his surprise, he emerges victorious in bidding for the contents of an old house once owned by a man named Steve. As Garrett sifts through the various belongings, his initial excitement is tinged with disappointment; rather than discovering the coveted Atari Cosmos he had been seeking, he instead stumbles upon a collection of Steve’s personal effects, which includes intriguing artifacts such as an Orb and a Crystal, hinting at a deeper story behind their previous owner.
Siblings Henry and Natalie relocate to the town of Chuglass after the passing of their mother, seeking a fresh start amidst their grief.
Upon their arrival, they encounter Dawn, a unique real estate agent who also operates a mobile petting zoo, adding an unexpected charm to their new environment.
On his inaugural day at school, Henry finds himself in a precarious situation when his experimental jetpack is sabotaged, resulting in significant damage to a nearby potato chip factory.
To evade expulsion, he devises a plan to pay Garrett to impersonate his uncle, which allows them to visit a local video game store.
It is there that Henry stumbles upon a mysterious Orb and Crystal, which he inadvertently combines, leading the group to Steve’s mine.
Meanwhile, Natalie grows concerned when she realizes Henry is missing and reaches out to Dawn for assistance.
As the four of them come together, they are unexpectedly drawn into a portal that transports them to the Overworld. In a parallel development, Malgosha learns of the Orb’s return and seizes the opportunity to release Steve from his confinement in the Nether, intent on reclaiming the Orb while holding Dennis hostage as leverage.
As Henry bravely battles the monsters that emerge under the cover of night, he discovers a newfound ability to manipulate blocks, which he skillfully uses to construct a sturdy wooden fortress for protection.
In the midst of this chaotic struggle, the Earth Crystal is inadvertently shattered, leading to a significant setback for the group. At dawn, Steve arrives on the scene, swiftly vanquishing the remaining monsters. He informs the team that they will need to procure a replacement Crystal from the Woodland Mansion, and he decides to accompany them on this crucial quest.
To ensure they are adequately prepared for the challenges ahead, Steve takes the group to a nearby village, where he shares his expertise in crafting, demonstrating essential techniques that will aid them in their journey.
