Unexpected : In a new, spoiler-filled marketing campaign, the studio has decided to stop calling the most recent Marvel movie Thunderbolts .
Just three days after the film’s theatrical release, Marvel has begun rebranding “Thunderbolts*” under the new title “The New Avengers,” which is an odd move.

In the last sequence, the main cast of heroes is referred to as The New Avengers, and the Florence Pugh-led film’s official title had an asterisk. The title card “Thunderbolts*” is altered during the credits to “The New Avengers,” suggesting that this was the true title from the beginning.
In order to reflect this, Marvel has already begun renaming the movie in a number of locations, including on its social media pages. With her co-stars by her side, the studio posted a video on X on May 5th that showed Pugh tearing off a layer of the “Thunderbolts billboard to reveal the “New Avengers” title underneath.
In the video, the group exclaims, “New Avengers!” yet a shushing sound is heard because the clip was most likely shot prior to the release of the film.
New posters featuring the title “New Avengers” were also published by the official X accounts for IMAX, Dolby, and Fandango. On Fandango, a poster with the updated name took the place of the original “Thunderbolts*” poster so that moviegoers would see it when they bought tickets.
At least one billboard now reads “New Avengers” instead of “Thunderbolts*,” and Marvel even posted a video of actor Sebastian Stan approaching a bus stop to personally replace the previous banner with the updated one.
This was one of the few times Marvel, a company notorious for its secrecy, publicly revealed the conclusion of one of its own movies just a few days after it was released.

At the domestic box office, “Thunderbolts*” made $76 million in its premiere. Although a film with the title “Avengers” would be expected to have a much bigger start, this was thought to be a good start. Now, the question is whether the title change will increase ticket sales for the movie by drawing in casual fans who might be drawn in by the “Avengers” link.
By the time “Thunderbolts*” ends, Yelena Belova (Pugh), Bucky Barnes (Stan), Alexei Shostakov (David Harbour), John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Ava Starr (Hannah John-Kamen), and Bob (Lewis Pullman) make up the New Avengers.
However, a post-credits sequence shows that Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), also known as Captain America, is assembling his own Avengers team and is suing the New Avengers for copyright over the Avengers moniker. The majority of the actors from “Thunderbolts*” will appear in “Avengers: Doomsday,” which is scheduled to open in theaters in May 2026, and is anticipated to follow that war.
