In their message, they expressed their sorrow and requested that fans and the public show respect for Douglas, his wife, and his family during this challenging time.

The band also assured followers that they would provide further information as it becomes available, emphasizing the importance of understanding and compassion in the wake of this loss.

Born in Barking in 1966, McCarthy was part of a significant migration from London to Essex during the mid-twentieth century, a movement that saw many seeking new opportunities along the Thames estuary.

As the son of a metal worker, he spent his early years on Canvey Island before his family relocated to the Chelmsford area. It was in this vibrant environment that McCarthy, alongside drummer David Gooday, Bon Harris, and Simon Granger, formed the band Nitzer Ebb.

Their musical journey was heavily influenced by the eclectic records they discovered in the local Parrot Record shops, as well as the pulsating disco and funk beats that resonated from Canvey Island’s Goldmine nightclub, a venue McCarthy frequented despite being underage.

Nitzer Ebb’s initial formation was driven by a drum named John, crafted by McCarthy’s father, with rehearsals taking place in the home of Bon Harris’ mother. The band’s early performances were met with a lukewarm reception, largely due to their clash with the conservative nightlife scene that surrounded them.

As McCarthy recounted in a 2019 interview with Luke Turner for The Guardian, he came to the realization that the band needed to carve out its own distinct identity, leading to a rebellious mantra of disregarding external opinions. Their fortunes changed when Phil Harding, a producer associated with the hit-making trio Scott, Aitken & Waterman, witnessed one of their shows and subsequently offered them studio time.

This opportunity coincided with the rising influence of Hi-NRG music in London’s gay clubs, which helped propel Nitzer Ebb to sign with Mute Records, culminating in the release of their debut album, That Total Age, in 1987.

Over the years, the band continued to evolve, incorporating guitar elements into their sound while maintaining the Constructivist aesthetic that characterized their early work, all the while nurturing a lifelong passion for skateboarding. Their innovative approach left a lasting impact on a diverse range of artists, influencing everyone from Nine Inch Nails to the early pioneers of Detroit techno.

McCarthy, often regarded as a quintessential figure of Essex humor characterized by self-deprecation and sharp wit, once articulated his approach to performance as “shouting and pointing.” In the early years, particularly throughout the 1990s, his attire typically consisted of casual shorts and t-shirts, reflecting a laid-back persona. However, in more recent times, he has transformed his image, opting for tailored suits, slicked-back hair, and aviator sunglasses.

This striking evolution in his appearance has created an astonishing presence, reminiscent of encountering a menacing Terminator at a lively rave, blending an air of authority with an unexpected flair for the dramatic.

Following the dissolution of Nitzer Ebb in 1995, McCarthy ventured into a variety of collaborative projects, notably partnering with former Depeche Mode member Alan Wilder on the Recoil initiative. However, his most significant collaboration emerged with techno producer Terence Fixmer, resulting in the duo Fixmer / McCarthy.

Their 2004 album, Between The Devil, stands out as an underrated gem that seamlessly blends the vigorous essence of Nitzer Ebb with elements of electroclash and techno. In 2013, McCarthy released a solo album titled Kill Your Friends, further showcasing his artistic evolution.

The reformation of Nitzer Ebb in 2006 allowed the band to tour and produce new music, and their performance at London’s Lafayette in April 2022, following the Covid pandemic, hinted at a resurgence of their influence on contemporary techno artists such as Objekt, Regis, and Perc, potentially reaching a new audience.

Unfortunately, shortly after this promising event, McCarthy had to step back from touring due to health issues, casting a shadow over the band’s renewed momentum.

In his 2019 reflection within Quietus Baker’s Dozen, McCarthy reminisced about his formative years, highlighting the profound connection between music and his weekend experiences. He described how he and his father, both avid birdwatchers, would rise early to explore the mudflats of Canvey Island, where they would gather samphire.

This ritual was accompanied by the resonant sounds of Elgar, which filled their home as his father prepared meals that included samphire and offal. Sundays, in particular, transformed into a musical journey that transitioned from classical composers like Bach and Strauss to the smooth vocals of Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, and Sarah Vaughan, culminating in a cozy evening of television.

This consistent routine instilled in McCarthy the belief that music plays a crucial role in shaping the atmosphere of any activity, a lesson he absorbed as a young child listening to Elgar amidst the natural beauty of Canvey Island.
