On May 18, some fans were upset about the contestant who was left out each time the remaining American Idol finalists were further reduced.
Other fans, though, were thrilled with the ultimate decision.
Undoubtedly, each of the vocalists had their own loyal fans and contributed something unique to the final. Everyone has talent, and their careers will only advance thanks to American Idol’s large viewership, it seemed.
Before the May 18 2025 final, the three finalists were Jamal Roberts, Breanna Nix, and John Foster. Social media opinions were sharply divided, with some fans being furious about the people who were cut and others being ecstatic.
The final two results were revealed by host Ryan Seacrest at approximately 9:15 p.m. ET. The three finalists appeared anxious as they gathered on stage.
During the live show, Seacrest declared, “John Foster is the first person to take a coveted spot in your top two after the nationwide vote.”
Foster rubbed Breanna Nix’s back after placing his hands to his face in an emotional gesture.
“The final person still in the running to be your American Idol after the nationwide vote is Jamal,” Seacrest said.
An emotional Nix turned to Roberts and said, “I’m so proud of you.”
Later, Seacrest announced that Foster was the second cut, leaving Roberts standing as the winner of the entire season. He also revealed that more than 26 million people had voted, the most in the show’s history.
Roberts’ fans were ecstatic, while Foster’s fans were disappointed. One irate fan wrote, “John Foster was clearly the better singer!”

Earlier in the evening, some fans were also offended by Nix’s cut. “It’s absurd that Breanna Nix didn’t win on American Idol! The show’s best vocalist, hands down.
