Mexican Havy Ship Crashes Into Brooklyn Bridge Killing Two Sailors
What caused the crash?
According to the Mexican government, 22 crew members were hurt, 11 of them critically, and nine of them were in stable condition.
According to Mexico’s president Claudia Sheinbaum, a sailing ship participating in a promotional tour in New York City collided with the famous Brooklyn Bridge, killing two Mexican navy sailors and seriously injuring another eleven.
Ship was heading the wrong direction
The Cuauhtémoc, an academy training ship carrying 277 passengers and named after the last Aztec king, lost power and collided with the bridge on Saturday night. Shortly before the collision that broke the Cuauhtémoc’s three masts, dozens of sailors in ceremonial uniforms were seen dispersed across yardarms, according to eyewitness footage.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of two crew members of the training ship Cuauhtémoc, who lost their lives in the unfortunate accident in New York,” Sheinbaum wrote in an update posted to X on Sunday morning.
“We send our condolences and support to their families. The navy ministry is currently caring for the injured with assistance from local authorities.
According to a Mexican government bulletin, nine crew members were in stable condition and 22 were hurt, including 11 critically. The bulletin stated that the navy, “aware of the risks naval personnel face in their operations, deeply regrets what happened and reaffirms its commitment to the crew crew’s families to provide timely attention and follow-up to the investigations into the events that occurred to accurately determine the causes of this incident.”
