Months after a health scare and in the midst of more significant legal issues, Bishop T.D. Jakes is stepping down from his leadership role after about thirty years as one of the most well-known representatives of American religion.

As the senior pastor of Potter’s House, a non-denominational Pentecostal megachurch in Dallas, Texas, which has become a cultural and political force, the 67-year-old megachurch leader declared on Sunday that he was retiring.

During a ceremony on April 27, T.D. Jakes’ remarked, “I’ve seen too many men build something and stay so long, that they kill what they build,”

In addition to investing millions in affordable housing and anti-poverty initiatives and founding an organization with campuses all over the world that takes pride in community engagement, T.D. Jakes‘s has become a multimillionaire businessman who also writes plays and novels.

Roland S. Martin, political analyst, stated on his web broadcast on Monday that “this is a significant announcement, this is a worldwide ministry.”

“Both sides of the bird”: Jake is a presidential advisor during difficult times.

Over the yearsbT.D. Jakes’s has advised many high-profile individuals in the business, entertainment and civil rights world, but especially noteworthy has been close relationships with presidents across party lines.

When Bill Clinton admitted to having “sinned” in his relationship with the former White House intern Monica Lewinsky almost 30 years ago, for example, the Texas megachurch leader was among the clergy the then-president called upon when seeking the nation’s forgiveness.

In a 2012 interview with Oprah, T.D. Jakes’s stated, “I try not to tell presidents how to be presidents.”

T.D. Jakes minister to both sides of the bird :-

Jakes attempted to uphold his bipartisan image during the George W. Bush administration, despite more liberal supporters questioning his closeness to the conservative evangelical, claiming he was a “minister to both sides of the bird.” He brought attention to the inadequate government disaster response for the victims of Hurricane Katrina and petitioned the White House to increase relief funding to African countries.

During a 2005 prayer service at the National Cathedral, T.D. Jakes’s looked at Bush and remarked, “It is more important what we do than what we say.”

After severing his relationship with his previous pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, during the 2008 campaign, Barack Obama embraced Jakes early in his rise to the presidency. He later invited the Texas pastor to his inauguration in 2009 and the two had several prayer counsels via phone and in-person.

According to Obama, Jak T.D. Jakes’ makes Americans “more sympathetic, and more loving as a country,” in a December 2015 Variety interview.

A Hollywood powerhouse that also produces faith-based material :-

A series of original TV films and a brief chat show that was popular with Black audiences in particular helped T.D. Jakes’s become well-known outside of the megachurch.

In his “Seven Deadly Sins” anthology, which was based on Christian fiction novelist Victoria Christopher Murray’s books, he made a number of Lifetime movies. Starring in the movies were Eric Benét, LisaRaye McCoy, Romeo Millo, Kandi Burrus, Tina Knowles, Keri Hilson, and Michelle Williams.

T.D. Jakes’s’ 2021 acquisition :-

His 2006 book “Not Easily Broken” was adapted into a 2009 movie that starred Morris Chestnut and Academy Award nominee Taraji P. Henson. Additionally, he has pursued business endeavors with billionaire and family friend Tyler Perry, including T.D. Jakes’s’ 2021 acquisition of land next to the Hollywood megaproducer’s Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and 11Alive report that the two bought more than 130 acres of land at the city’s closed Army base, Fort McPherson.

At the 46th Grammy Awards in 2004, T.D. Jakes’, a four-time Grammy nominee, won one award for best gospel choir or chorus album for “A Wing And A Prayer.”

“The T.D. Jakes Show,” which Jakes hosted, was shown on a few Tegna stations nationwide and later rerun on the Oprah Winfrey Network. In 2016, the program ran for one season.
